Herd managment in HOT weather

For alot of the country this has been the hottest summer that anyone can remember. Many breeders have lost rabbits or the rabbits have lost condition. Care of your rabbits should always be a priority.
Many things have been written recently about how to keep them safe in hot weather. Fans, air-conditioners, frozen tiles, cold clean water daily and a host of other useful tips.
Here is one thing that I have never seen on any of the lists. It is a 4 letter word ;) SALT
salt spools in the cage...........free choice use of salt causes the rabbit to drink more water. In the heat hydration is critical, salt intake helps the electrolyte balance and helps keep the rabbit healthier. In the tropics salt tablets are used in people to prevent dehydration by encouraging fluid intake. Personally I use salt spools in every cage 100% of the time. I buy them by the case usually 2 cases per year (a case is 200 spools) I use the trace mineral (brown-red) to supplement not only the salt but minerals that may be lacking in the food.
Help you rabbits stay hydrated with fesh water and SALT spools.
