Today I gave alot of thought to my rabbit program. I am happy in all that I have accomplished in these last 9 years. Not many people have the chance to experience BIS Convention and the next year a group win, along with all my very special friendships and the bueatiful rabbits who have shared my dreams. I keep all my rabbits here with me until the day they exit this life.
Many of these old bunnies are retired now and live the "good" life.
Every day that I clean their cages I take a moment to remember their career and thank them for all they did.

Oh and did I mention I have a bueatiful capable daughter? :)

MAY 28 RUTLAND VT BEST IN SHOW white sr doe GC SILVERTONE KRYSTAL show A in show B she was 2nd res. in show. It was a nice show but the heat became worse as the day went on. UARC sponsored a Speciality however I decided to scratch my rabbits from the Spec. I felt that the risk of putting them back on the table was not worth taking. Three shows in one day in the heat are just too much. As usual there were no legs for English only 3 EA were there my rew doe and sr colored buck and a jr of Laurie A. Its really something when to grand an English you practically have to get 3 BIS.
We do have a close show next weekend only 40 min away. I dont know yet if its worth taking rabbits or not. I may just go and help out. If its hot I am not going.
I can not believe how some people treat rabbits I saw LOTS of rabbits in tiny carriers that the rabbit could not even lay down in, large breed rabbits in carriers so small that I would not even put a baby English Angora in. NO water.....filthy bedding......and the only person in the building that brought a fan was...you guessed it, yours truly. It was very hot and there were multiple rabbits in carriers together laying on each other. Where oh where is the compassion for the animal??? Where is the common sense, where is the the conscience level of these people. I even heard one individual say that they were hot and tired and that they were going to leave the rabbits in their carriers until morning, are you kidding me?

Today I recieved my Domestic Rabbit. I took the time to read the NARBC breed artical . This artical decreed that those of use who do not do fibre arts, spin or work with the wool are not "complete" Angora people who can not really appreciate the ANGORA RABBIT. Persons who only show rabbits are somehow less than capable and lacking in knowledge. I am very disappointed that the NARBC club would take such a position on the value of breeders who only show rabbits. I have many friends and dedicated Angora breeders that must sadly be deemed to not be "complete"...........I am just wondering if the spinners and fibre artists who buy our wool and DO NOT raise rabbits.......they must just as saddly not be "complete" Let me say here that the edititorial comments may only refect the author and not the club, however they are written and published under the banner of NARBC

The absolute truth of the matter is that
1. The English Angoras only have 2 Varieties (try Polish, Jerseys, Mini Rex etc. that take up the whole show day with color and varieties one after the other)

English Angoras NEED the brokens to help the numbers shown.
Brokens should be evaluated on the show table.The good ones will be successful. The others will
not, just like the white and the colored rabbits.

......these are purebred English angoras not mixed breed animals. IT IS ONLY A PATTERN OF COLORS ALREADY APPROVED. This pattern has been in EA for more than 30 years.

2. English Angoras that are presented are taken care of every day since the day they are born! Not only do we have to take care of the body and mind; the coat takes a minimum of 1 1/2 hours per week PER RABBIT ................add that up.

3. Angora people can not raise 35 to God knows how many animals for presentation and then only bring the 8 that are the best....other breeds raise many many animals then bring a few.........we can not do that because of the intense coat care.

4. The "committee" in general has NO experience in Angoras ...the care of the Angora ...the modern coat of the English Angora and the EXTREME physical time it takes to raise an angora. They also have very little on hands experience evaluating a SECOND coat and its properties. Very few if any have ever raised an Angora from a baby. Angoras are a complicated animal to keep; besides maintaining good flesh and tone the wool has rigorous nutrition and grooming requirements.

I was there during the several hours that the rabbits were "evaluated" One committee member in particular rough handled the animals almost beyond what many of us watching could endure!
Frankly he was not respectful of the animal.....and not respectful that it belonged to someone else!

We began the show day with the announcement that NO person with an entry in the breed could run rabbits:
no person entered in the breed could be behind the show table:
no person entered in the breed could carry a rabbit to the table.
As a person with an English (or other breed) angora entered you could remove the rabbit from the coop (due to the horrid coops and small doors) but they had to hand it over to a runner (from another breed who had the piece of paper).
The breeder, spectators, were standing back from the table, and only the persons behind the table attended to the rabbits on the table.
WHAT A HUGE difference from the last 3 years.............the judge did his job talking only minimally to the staff behind the table (not persons entered in the breed).
This judge was an experienced judge who knows how to manage a table and how to conduct himself in a manner that was beyond reproach.
Compared to several previous years this was a BLIND judging.............it should always be this way at Convention. Win Loose or Draw; is only possible when rules of protocol are followed.
Bragging rights are only RIGHT when animals are judged for what they are and not by who the owners are.

The Standard of Perfection does not include zip codes.

Herd managment in HOT weather

For alot of the country this has been the hottest summer that anyone can remember. Many breeders have lost rabbits or the rabbits have lost condition. Care of your rabbits should always be a priority.
Many things have been written recently about how to keep them safe in hot weather. Fans, air-conditioners, frozen tiles, cold clean water daily and a host of other useful tips.
Here is one thing that I have never seen on any of the lists. It is a 4 letter word ;) SALT
salt spools in the cage...........free choice use of salt causes the rabbit to drink more water. In the heat hydration is critical, salt intake helps the electrolyte balance and helps keep the rabbit healthier. In the tropics salt tablets are used in people to prevent dehydration by encouraging fluid intake. Personally I use salt spools in every cage 100% of the time. I buy them by the case usually 2 cases per year (a case is 200 spools) I use the trace mineral (brown-red) to supplement not only the salt but minerals that may be lacking in the food.
Help you rabbits stay hydrated with fesh water and SALT spools.

Grand Champion BISS Over the Hills Tristar, better know as Tristan passed away today. What a grand rabbit he was! Over the years he produced some of the finest English shown. His last show daughter GC multi BIS Silvertone Miranda just finished her show career. He was a sweet tempered rabbit and a quick willing breeder. I bought him from Marilyn DeMarree when he was 3 months old. A good long carefree life: he would have been 8 years old in Dec.

It has been some time since I got on my high-horse about rabbit care and over breeding. Lately phone calls from people have convinced me that there are a number of people (I really don't even consider them breeders) who produce high numbers of bunnies and sell them for $50 or so, usually they site the bloodlines of well known breeders so they can sell their bunnies. I have seen a number of these bunnies from several puppy-mill type operations. I assure you that reputable breeders would never knowingly sell these people rabbits. The persons in question have even resorted to asking other people to try to buy rabbits from well known programs for them. Dirty unkempt bunnies from overcrowded conditions are not the way to begin a breeding or show program. Do not be fooled by web sites and ads proclaiming to have certain bloodlines, what ever bloodlines they have: the resulting bunnies are not representative of my breeding program or any other breeder of note. Most of these people breed more litters in a year than we breed in 3 to 5 years. WE rely on the quality of our stock not the quantity. It is appalling to see filthy carriers and dirty matted bunnies.
When I see a very poor level of care at a show..............I can only imagine how much worse it must be at home for these unfortunate animals.
Please please............before you buy.............be sure you know what you are getting. And please ...please before you sell ...........know where your rabbits are going.

This past weekend the triple shows at Gouverneur NY were not the biggest shows I have attended, however the quality was extremly high. There were some exceptional animals a holland lop a tan also a dwarf. GC Silvertone Miranda came away with RIS in the show B under noted judge Scott Rodriguez. Miranda was BIS at the Pa convention in Feb and BIS in Fulton ny a couple weeks ago, she is still going strong. The weather was very hot and humid not great to realy show off a coat.
My rabbits spent half the day in the air conditionded car.

The crown jewel of the eastern show season opened this past weekend Feb.6-7 in Labanon Pa. This show is held by PSARBA. A huge winter blizzard producing 20++ inches of heavy snow did not put a damper on the festivities. Well known for being very efficiently managed and staffed, this years show did not disappoint!

TIPS TO MAKE LIFE EASIER

I have finally implemented the new stack system. This system will help you and the other people in your life who are called upon to give your bunnies consistent care. I bought blank cage tags (cage tags inc.) for the letters I purchased mail box stick on letters at Wal Mart. Each stack of cages now has a letter. I put the letter (example A) on the bottom of the water bottles and 1...2...or 3 on the bottom of each water bottle. The top bottle on stack A is number A 1 ...the middle A 2 and the bottom A 3.
This system is especially helpful in the winter because of the frequent removal of bottles for defrosting. All rabbits will get their own bottle back, this is so important for rabbit health. When I have to be out of town anyone caring for my rabbits can at a glance and without knowing the name of the rabbit update me on any problems.
The small silver clip in the pic. is the same as found on water bottle springs so the tags can be easily removed for cleaning stacks. This system was very inexpensive about $12.00 for my whole rabbitry.

At this time I have only one comment about this Convention.
English Angoras were judged with a breeder (who had rabbits entered) behind the table with the judge (also from Ca.)..........This should be against show rules, it is inappropriate at the least. ARBA Convention is supposed to be a blind judging giving all exhibitors anonymity. Breed Chairs should arrange for people with no entries in the breed to help the judge. The judge should also ask people behind the table who have entries in the breed to remove themselves for the duration of their breed.
The appearance of non bias fairness should be paramount at this the largest most important show of the year.

Cage cards

I started using cage cards for ID when I began raising rabbits. I had these awful metal holders and index cards. The metal holders got rusty and dirty and we all know what happens to the index cards. So I found plastic holders and plastic cards; they are readily available on line and at the rabbit shows. The plastic cards are used with an extra fine writing marker. Even if water of other liquid falls on them they do not smudge. They can be cleaned off with rubbing alcohol and used for a different rabbit. The cards come in many colors ...no surprise but I use pink for the does and blue for the bucks that are permanently in the herd. Young rabbits growing up have yellow cards for does and green cards for bucks. Once they are accepted as a permanent part of the herd they get their "grown up cards".Information on my cards includes ear number, color, sex, name, parents, and date of birth.
I understand some breeders will argue that they know their rabbits and don't need cage cards....well what happens if you are sick or out of town? The best thing about cell phones is that they let us be in touch 24 hours a day. The best thing about cage cards is that a care giver can tell you in one second what rabbit is the subject of their concern.

Managing your rabbitry for health and happiness

Today I wanted to share with you a few tips to help manage your rabbitry. A healthy happy herd will live longer and produce better bunnies for you.
I do not use a watering system for my small herd, I use clean water bottles so I can monitor water intake. Bottles are emptied and refilled with clean cold water as needed.
I use mineral salt wheels in every cage they are hanging using a metal shower curtain holder. Salt and minerals are an important part of supplementing pelleted feeds. In addition to Blue Seals Sunshine Plus and some rolled oats, salt provides electrolytes to keep your animals processing their feed efficiently. You can not make your animals lick the salt, so you can be assured that if they use the salt mineral wheel they need it. Also pictured are the toys each rabbit plays with, they are colorful easy, to clean, and have a little bell. They are available at Pets Supplies Plus (in the cat isle) and are approx 4 inches wide.
We all know that monitoring feed and water intake is important. I use a simple effective system for food monitoring. I bought a bag of plastic clothespins at a local dollar store. I have included pictures, I put the clothes pin on the left top of the feeder when the rabbit is eating normally: when an individual does not clean up the feed at the next feeding I place the clothespin in the center of the feeder. I always think I will remember what rabbit is off feed, but the clothespin reminds me. If the rabbit has left feed for 2 feedings I move the pin to the extreme right hand side of the feeder and go into alert mode. When the rabbit returns to normal feeding I return the clothespin to the left side.....

Today I am recalling my friend Cheryl, my dearest Godson Hunter, my Mom and my rabbits from the past. There is value memories as they hold promises of the future. My father is 93 years young this year, my daughter Tricia is 26, my oldest bunny will be 7 in December.......is not life amazing! In 7 short years my rabbits have won the biggest ARBA Convention ever held 2005 , the Nationals 2006, a group ARBA Convention 2006 and my heart.

It is with great sadness I must report the passing of our friend Cheryl Combs. Better known in the rabbit world as Colin's Grandmother. Cheryl was Colin's biggest supporter in his quest to win the BIS ARBA Youth in 2007. Cheryl lost her battle with cancer 7-31-09. We last saw Cheryl (Tamika ..our pet name for her) at the 2009 Angora Nationals in Canandaigua Ny, I am so happy she made it there.

I thought I would share with you a little tip for your pedigree book. Sometimes they become jumbled and cumbersome. I use page tabs (readily available at Wal Mart and other retailers). They come in colors (I use these) and clear. I stager the tabs for easy viewing. The tabs are adjustable and can be moved if you need to move them. The Does are in the front and all the Bucks (I only have 4 herd sires) are in the back. Mostly they are in the book with the oldest animals first and so on down the line. I use a Binder with 3 inch rings and a carry bag to put everything in. The binder also has pockets and other openings for misc. show reports and pedigrees for sale animals.

The show season is over and considering I did not show any of the fall shows (to prepare for Convention 08) the year was fantastic! In the east there are only about 14 to 16 shows I can go to. Unfortunately there is NO way that anyone except people on the west coast can ever win the NARBC sweepstakes. I feel that a new way of compiling points should be considered. Personally I feel that exhibitors should be allowed to submit only points from 25 shows (the same number for everybody no matter where you live) this would level the playing field. Short of moving to California no one else has a chance to go to enough shows to be competitive in sweeps. I have never shown for sweeps points, because its an exercise in futility..
The spring season was enormously successful 8 BEST IN SHOWS and several Best Res. in shows with 3 different does from 3 different litters. Thank you GC SILVERTONE GLAMOUR GAL...GC SILVERTONE GRAND DIVA and the baby SILVERTONE ISABELLA.

Last weekend I decided to travel to the double shows in Rutland VT. I took 2 rabbits the multiple BIS DIVA and the multiple BIS GLAMOUR GAL. I only took the 2 BIG GIRLS. This weekend Glamour GAl prevailed over the 16 mo old Grand Diva. On the BIS table we had 2 excellent judges that truly know how to examine an Angora and how to bring the best look from the wonderful wool. GC SILVERTONE GLAMOUR GAL won BIS OPEN for both shows. The judges Josh Humphries and Rusty Westhoff....Thank you to them especially for their praise for her body type in addition to the stunning wool. The weather was cold and rainy at first but cleared and warmed as the day went on. I also met a fellow exhibitor that I had never talked to before, her name is Josie she hails from Quebec Canada. This was Glamour Gals 3rd and 4th BEST in show. Thank you to the Vermont club for thier hospitality.

NATIONAL ANGORA RABBIT SHOW 2009

This years National Angora show was held in Canandaigua NY this past weekend. My colored sr. doe GC SILVERTONE GLAMOUR GAL was BOB English Open and BEST RES IN SHOW. Glamour GAl is 11 mos old and a multiple BIS winner. Best of Variety White was jr. doe SILVERTONE MARABELLA (5 MO OLD)....Winner of the jr. colored buck class went to SILVERTONE MASTER CARD.
The highlight of the day and evening was the famous auction. The final lot a RABBIT TREE (a tree of rabbit hand blown ornaments) it went for $425.00 and the buyer later upped the antee to $500.00 This final lot is a donation to Susan G Koman Race for the Cure. Thank you to all the bidders. Special thanks to Karin and Jack Bailey for thier winning donation. This lot was a total surprise to everyone it was my secret. The RABBIT family responded to the cause, pictures will follow.

The day was beautiful, sunny warm and relaxed.
I took my Sr. white doe GC SILVERTONE GRAND DIVA almost 15 mos old and still sparkling white and lovely. We had 17 English a nice showing, BOB both shows GC SILVERTONE GRAND DIVA.........BEST IN SHOW FOR BOTH SHOWS...........GRAND DIVA. BIS judges were Howard Keller and Sam Rizzo. I also took a jr colored buck Silvertone Master Card he won his baby class both shows. Dru Shepherd had BOS both shows. This weekend coming up there are 2 shows in Fulton NY the weather is predicted to be unseasonably hot so I have not decided if I am going. Tomarrow I will groom and see if Diva can go again or if its time to take the coat off. Diva earned her first leg winning the sr. white doe class ARBA Convention 2008, its hard to think its nearly May.

Silvertone Surprise Party is a litter sister to the two does in the last post. The parents are both BIS OPEN winning REW English Angoras. This baby and other broken bunnies out of purebred English Angoras should be allowed to be shown and granded just like the rest of the litter.
Broken English naturally occur and should not need to be part of ARBAs development program unlike some other breeds NO OTHER BREED IS NEEDED TO PRODUCE BROKEN ENGLISH. (In my opinion.)

The huge PA Convention 2-7&8-2008 a fun show and a welcome break from this long and miserable winter. There were 2 OPEN shows and 1 Spec. BOB in all three shows the lovely GC SILVERTONE GRAND DIVA. In colored sr. doe classes show A was won by a terrific mature tort doe owned by Alex Stepnoski out of Silvertone bloolines.........Spec. show colored sr. doe and granding GC SILVERTONE GLAMOUR GAL. Sundays show B included a newcomer who won the sr. colored doe SILVERTONE FERGIE. The colored sr. doe also won BOV all 3 shows. Congratulations Billie Jo Harper, Jessica Fuller and Lori White, I wish them the very best with their new bunnies. As usual I will add pics later
BISS was an exceptional FA owned and bred by Amy Spang.

On a different note exhibitors, Angora and others should be more careful to have CLEAN carriers, and or carriers that are the appropriate size for the rabbit. I am sorry to say that filthy carriers and carriers so small the rabbit could not sit up or turn around were seen by all. Cruel confinement at any time should not be allowed. I want to say that I am not talking about a smaller cage...or a days worth of rabbit droppings. I am talking about EXTREME conditions. Tolerance for this behaviour is unforgivable. These bunnies have no voice and no control of their situation. Rabbits should be valued and lovingly cared for at home and at the shows. If we value our hobby .........we must be committed promoting the ethical treatment of rabbits.

Dear Journey was mother to many ARBA GC and especially mother to SILVERTONE CARMELLA 2006 GROUP 1st ARBA Convetion and to GC Silvertone Accent ...........There is no ending for Journey. Her incredible life is a challenge for the future. She was a gentle sweet member of my family.

As the long winter continues in the east, a break in the weather allowed me to go to Rochester N.Y. Feb. 4, 2009 for the Open and Speciality shows. Open show results BOB SILVERTONE GRAND DIVA (she was BOSV white ARBA convention) BOV colored in her first show winning a sr. doe class of 9 SILVERTONE GLAMOUR GAL.
The speciality was wonderful as it had substantial entries in all four Angora breeds. Aprox. 28 English were shown with about 8 exhibitors from 2 countries. BISS BOB BOV colored SILVERTONE GLAMOUR GAL. BOV White and granding in 3 times shown......SILVERTONE GRAND DIVA.
I only took those 2 does. It was exciting to see so many Angoras I am guessing the total entry in the Spec. to be around 80 Angoras. I will post some pics of my girls soon. We don't have another showing opportunity until PA Convention in Feb.

Today I was feeling very sad about Reflections passing away. Sometimes it seems that the beautiful things in life come to us, and then; in a fleeting moment are gone: never to come again.
Long before the the newest baby bunny gets to the show table we have pondered it's coming into the world.
It's future has been plotted.....dreamed.... hopeful that the new baby bunny will accomplish all we have planned for it.
In many ways, breeders are artists painting with genes.
Today as I bred a wonderful doe to a superb buck.........I began another painting.

there is a past, a present, and the hopefulness of the future.

ARBA CONVENTION 2008 ...results

This years ARBA Convention as you all know was in Louisville KY. It would have been a long drive, I was able to stop and see my 92 year old father. He is amazing! He looks like about 75 and drives all over in search of antiques. This years convention was for the most part relaxed and friendly. SILVERTONE ANGORAS held up our end by winning 3 of the 4 colored classes. 1st colored sr. doe and BOV and BOS SILVERTONE DREAMZ OF GLORY, an amazing class of 23........1st colored sr. buck and BOSV SILVERTONE TRAVIS T., ........1st colored jr. buck SILVERTONE DARIUS. 1st in the white Sr. doe class SILVERTONE GRAND DIVA won over an impressive class. Margaret Bartold was 2nd in the colored sr doe class with a lovely doe out of Convention 2006 Group winner Silvertone Carmella. Amy Arata was 2nd in the white sr. doe class with a doe out of 2 Silvertone parents. Colin Burns YOuth BOB is out of Silvertone Drama Queen. I had Critter portraits do pics of the Sr. class winners and I cant wait to post them, as soon as I get the CD. Overall Silvertone won more classes in the breed section than any other breeder.

Last evening Reina from Fern Valley gave me a call. We have had a long talk and I believe we have resolved all past misunderstandings. Normally I would not post this communication in my blog, but I felt it was a very good use of "talking things out". annonimous bloggers have no credibility. A good conversation between 2 adults can resolve many issues most of which are just different view points. Each of us has the right to be respected for our contributions to breeding better rabbits. I am very happy to put this all aside! Back to grooming! The Convention seniors seem to be coming along slowly. I do promise to post some baby pics of some now 5 month old rabbits. Also kicking around is a tort doe named Silvertone "MONIQUE", and a cute REW doe who has a BIS OPEN already GC Silvertone La Contessa.

Another day in the life

Tomorrow I finally have a day off.........I am so happy 2 days in a row to groom and evaluate bunnies. One thing I really enjoy is just spending time with my guys old and upcoming. Some have coats that need grooming and a few the still need a cut down. My rabbits live in a humidity and climate controlled environment. In this heat and humidity it is a must. Please contact me for availability of young rabbits as there will be some lovely individuals available. I hope to have new photos in a day or 2.
